The Medusa Project proposal consisted of hanging a large jellyfish sculpture made of recycled plastic bottle parts from the Harvard footbridge during the Cambridge River Festival on June 5th.
Aim: To Raise awareness about the billions of plastic bottle parts that make up the Great North Pacific Garbage Vortex.
Facts: Oceans make up 97% of Earth’s water sustaining us with oxygen and food.
. an area of the North Pacific twice the size of Texas is covered with plastic
. 90% of the 63.4 billion plastic bottles dumped each year end up in the sea
. that’s 173,589 plastic bottles a day, just in the U.S
. oceans contain 100 million tons of plastic debris
. out of 1 liter of sea water, 0.1 Kg is plankton, 0.6 Kg is plastic
. fish, birds and turtles feed on that plastic “soup”
. 100,000 large sea animals die each year from ingesting plastic parts
. all the wild fish we eat contain plastic
